- Arline Custer Memorial Prize for best book of 2009, awarded by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, West Virginia, District of Columbia.
- Invited to give a speech inside Ford’s Theatre on the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
The Burning of Washington: The British Invasion of 1814
- Selection of the History Book Club.
- Movie rights twice optioned by National Geographic.
- Arline Custer Memorial Prize for best book of 2001, awarded by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, West Virginia, District of Columbia.
- Invited annually to give a speech (based on this book) at Fort McHenry on the anniversary of Francis Scott Key writing the national anthem.
- Narrated inside the White House for Tribune Broadcasting TV while showing scorch marks from fires set by British troops in 1814.
- The White House announced that President Clinton took this book on vacation.
- Recipient of the annual book award from the Maryland Historical Society.
